Can you use Polymarket in the UK?

Not on polymarket.com. Polymarket restricts the UK itself: its developer documentation lists the United Kingdom as close-only on both the website and the API, so you can close existing positions but not open new ones. Its help centre goes further and lists the UK among fully restricted countries. Either way, a new UK user cannot open a position.

The restriction is Polymarket's own. We found no order from the Gambling Commission, a court or any other UK body telling internet providers to block the site. The UK's move so far is a statement: on 4 February 2026 the Gambling Commission said prediction-market products appear to fall under its betting intermediary licence. Polymarket is not on its public register.

OVERDOG is not Polymarket: we route orders to Polymarket's sports and esports order books through our own gateway. This page covers what the regulators said, what works for Polymarket in the UK today, the UK exchange alternatives, Kalshi and tax. It is not legal or tax advice.

Is Polymarket legal in the UK?

Polymarket holds no Gambling Commission licence. The Commission's post of 4 February 2026 says prediction-market products appear to fall under its betting intermediary licence, and an operator launching in Great Britain could not call itself non-gambling. It likens the model to a betting exchange, which the UK has had since 2000.

The warning is aimed at operators: unlicensed prediction markets should make sure they do not target or deal with customers in Great Britain. The offence is in section 33 of the Gambling Act 2005 — providing gambling facilities without the right permission. Since 2014 it reaches overseas firms that know or should know their facilities are, or are likely to be, used here.

The FCA's Perimeter Report, updated 16 July 2026, leaves sport and politics markets to the Gambling Commission. Markets on financial events are the FCA's; it treats those it has seen as binary options, banned for retail customers since 2 April 2019.

Will Polymarket be legal in the UK? It is lobbying: the Financial Times reported that its executives met FCA chief Nikhil Rathi in June 2026. The FCA says it may do more work on access to these products. We found no announced UK launch.

Why is Polymarket banned in the UK?

Because Polymarket put the UK on its own restriction list; we found no UK order blocking the site. Its documentation files the UK under regulatory restrictions, not sanctions, and gives no UK-specific reason. Its help centre names the general reasons: sanctions, local finance rules, gambling and prediction-market laws, and rules on money laundering and knowing your customer.

Its two published sources disagree on the detail. The developer documentation puts the UK in the close-only tier: you can close positions you already hold but cannot open new ones. The help centre, dated 14 August 2026, lists the UK among countries completely restricted. For a new user the answer is the same either way.

On the UK side, we found no network block. The Commission's October 2025 post on illegal gambling describes work with search engines, payment firms and social media sites. It names no prediction market. So when polymarket.com refuses you, that is the venue reading your location.

Does Polymarket work in the UK right now?

Only for reading. Polymarket's documentation says UK users can close existing positions but cannot open new ones, on both the website and the API. A HotMinute reporter testing from the UK in February 2026 could load the site and browse markets, then hit a banner saying depositing and trading were unavailable in their region.

The geoblock is why you can't deposit on Polymarket from Britain. Two cautions on the table below. Polymarket publishes UK-themed market pages, but a market about the UK is not a market open to the UK. And we have not probed UK networks ourselves, so the table rests on Polymarket's documents and that dated test.

How to use Polymarket in the UK

You cannot open positions on polymarket.com from the UK, and this page will not show you how to hide your location. OVERDOG is a different route to the same markets: Polymarket's sports and esports order books, reached through OVERDOG's own gateway. OVERDOG is not licensed by the Gambling Commission either, and this page does not say that using it from the UK is allowed. Checking your local law is up to you.

  1. Open overdog.bet and sign in with Telegram or Google. An account exists, but there is no document upload to deposit crypto.
  2. Deposit crypto: USDT, USDC, BTC, ETH, SOL or BNB. It is converted to Polymarket's US-dollar stable unit on Polygon, and there is no card or bank step.
  3. Pick a market — Premier League, Champions League, Formula 1, boxing or esports — at order-book prices.
  4. Place the order. The ticket shows a flat 1% OVERDOG fee plus Polymarket's own fees before you confirm.
  5. Settlement is on-chain, and a winning share redeems for $1. Withdraw to crypto whenever you want, or export your wallet.

Can you use Polymarket in the UK with a VPN?

Not within Polymarket's rules. Its help centre says it strictly prohibits VPNs or similar tools used to bypass geographic restrictions, and counts that as a breach of its terms of service. The Guardian reported in July 2026 that it opened an account through a VPN and deposited crypto. Polymarket replied that doing so from the UK breaks its terms.

A VPN changes the location a website sees, not the terms you accepted. Polymarket told the Guardian it is strengthening its compliance tools, including on-chain monitoring. The OVERDOG route involves no VPN.

Polymarket Premier League and football markets

These are Polymarket's own football books, listed below and linked from the league pages at the foot of this page. On 5 October 2026 the board had live Premier League, Champions League and Ballon d'Or markets, with Formula 1 and boxing alongside. It is sport and esports only, with no UK politics or election markets.

Prices come from Polymarket's order book, so a Premier League winner market shows what traders are paying, not a bookmaker's line. You can sell a futures position before the market settles, at whatever the book bids.

Prediction markets in the UK

Yes, there are prediction markets in the UK, and the licensed ones run on betting exchanges. That is how the Commission sees them too. Three exchanges now offer prediction-style markets to British customers. Each holds a betting intermediary licence on the Commission's public register.

They work like Polymarket: you trade against other customers, not against a bookmaker's price. What differs is the rules. Licensed firms must meet the Commission's rules on protecting customers, fairness, clean betting markets and preventing crime. Betfair Predicts also lists politics; the OVERDOG board has no UK politics or election markets.

What is the UK equivalent of Polymarket?

The closest licensed equivalents are Betfair Predicts, Matchbook's Predictions and Smarkets. They share the structure — a price set by other customers — and they hold Commission licences. What they do not share is the market itself. Each runs its own book with its own liquidity, while Polymarket's book is global and settles on-chain.

If you want a UK-licensed exchange, or the politics markets Betfair Predicts lists, those are built for it. OVERDOG routes to Polymarket's own sports and esports books, which carry no UK politics or election markets.

Is Kalshi available in the UK?

No. Kalshi lists the UK as a Restricted Jurisdiction in its member agreement. Anyone who lives in, is set up in, or is located in the UK may not access, use or trade on it. The clause came in a notice dated 23 October 2025, and Kalshi's help centre, updated 10 March 2026, still points to it.

Kalshi vs Polymarket from the UK is a tie: both refuse you, and neither is on the Commission's register. Elsewhere they differ. Kalshi is overseen by the CFTC, the American derivatives regulator, while Polymarket's global exchange settles on-chain. Kalshi's pages about the UK rank for UK searches, but a page about the UK is not access from it.

Do you pay tax on Polymarket winnings in the UK?

For a casual bettor, HMRC's starting point is no tax on betting — but we found no HMRC guidance on prediction markets, so the answer is not settled. Its Business Income Manual says betting and gambling, as such, do not constitute trading. It adds that a system, or even making a living from gambling, does not by itself create a trade. And the Taxation of Chargeable Gains Act 1992 declares betting winnings are not chargeable gains.

Two things stay open. First, whether HMRC would treat a prediction-market share as a bet at all. Second, the crypto leg. HMRC's Cryptoassets Manual lists exchanging one token for a different type of token as a disposal for Capital Gains Tax, so converting the coin you deposit can carry its own tax consequence.

This is not tax advice. If you trade often or in size, ask a UK tax adviser how these rules apply to you.

Trading Polymarket markets from the UK with OVERDOG

OVERDOG is an access layer to Polymarket's exchange, not a bookmaker. Prices come from the order book, set by traders on both sides, so there is no vig built into them. That describes the price, not your chance of winning. The cost is disclosed together and up front: a flat 1% OVERDOG fee plus Polymarket's own fees.

Settlement is on-chain, and a winning share redeems for $1 — the trail is public on the proof page. You can export your wallet and withdraw anytime, so we cannot freeze your funds. With no house position against you, winning never gets your account limited. Accounts do exist, through Telegram or Google, and a crypto deposit needs no document upload; that is not anonymity.

Betting is entertainment, not income. Stake only what you can afford to lose.

FAQ

Is Polymarket legit?

Polymarket is a real exchange with public order books. Its results are settled through UMA's oracle, where anyone can dispute a proposed outcome, and winning shares pay out on-chain. Its American arm says it is a CFTC-regulated exchange. But legit is not the same as open to you: from the UK you cannot open a new position on Polymarket, and it holds no Gambling Commission licence.

Is Polymarket gambling?

In Great Britain, both regulators put sport markets on the gambling side. The Gambling Commission says a prediction market launched here could not call itself a non-gambling product. The FCA leaves sport and politics to the Commission and treats markets on financial events as binary options. Polymarket wants its contracts treated as financial products instead.

Does Polymarket require KYC?

Not from every user of its global site so far. Trade press reported in May 2026 that Polymarket is pushing identity checks on some traders, such as high-volume and flagged accounts. For a UK user the question is moot, because no UK user can open a new position. OVERDOG asks for no document upload to deposit crypto, but accounts do exist.

Where is Polymarket legal?

Polymarket publishes its own restriction list in three tiers: blocked completely, close-only on the website and API, and close-only on the website alone. Its developer docs put the UK in the middle tier. Some countries also block Polymarket from their side, which that list never shows. Our Polymarket restricted countries page keeps both directions in one dated table.

Is there a Polymarket app in the UK?

Not one you can trade on. Polymarket's iPhone app is sold by Blockratize Inc and presents itself as the CFTC-regulated exchange for Americans, with eligibility requirements. Any app is still subject to the geoblock, which bars new positions from the UK. OVERDOG runs in the browser at overdog.bet, so there is nothing to install.
